Shifting Gears
By: Eric Smith
Without fail, when I go out to ride my bike, it is to go fast, get that heart rate up and feel the euphoric state that only hard riding can give me. It is an irresistible obsession that I’m always chasing. So when my girlfriend and I made plans to take my 8-year-old daughter out to the trail on a perfect late-August Saturday, I knew at least for one day I wouldn’t be getting my “fix”.

I can deal with it though because I have learned how to shift gears. For this ride, it isn’t about me or my heart rate or my “buzz”. It’s about transferring a little of that exuberant joy I have come to know to someone I cherish. It’s slowing down and remembering why I love this experience in the first place.

So after helping her through the traumatic experience of detaching from the computer and the virtual world of the Sims, we make the hour-long drive to a great pair of trails nearby.

PedalGR Ends the Season!
PedalGR End of Year PARTY!!! (and ride)
September 10th, 2008
PedalGR, meeting at 6:30pm on Wednesday, 9/17/08 at Founder’s Brewing Company, 235 Grandville Ave SW.

It’s September. The air is getting crisp, the darkness is coming way too fast, and the first season of PedalGR must come to an end. FEAR NOT! We will be going out in style! After a short 7.5 mile “Bridge Pedal,” in which we will cross the Grand River 6 times, we will have a PARTY at Founders, the MOST awesome place to party in Grand Rapids. Plus, we just might have a couple of crazy posed photos on the bridges and the Project X earth sculpture!

Riders will get free appetizers and the absolute coolest bicycle photo cake that Grand Rapids has EVER seen! Rumors of ice cream have been swirling as well. Founders Brewing Company, as our generous host of these rides all year (and the only place in the city with enough convenient bicycle parking), has provided great prizes that some lucky bicyclists will be heading home with. The free food is being provided by the Rapid Wheelmen Bicycle Club, sponsors of great weekly rides and bicycle tours all over the Grand Rapids area.

Register your bike at TMI
We are excited to announce a new free service at The Motion Initiative bike shop. Thanks to our friend Chip, we are now an official Grand Rapids bicycle registration location! When you come down to our shop, bring your bike, and we will register your bike with the Grand Rapids Police Department. You will receive a sticker for your bike that will identify you as the owner.  It is estimated that only 3% of all stolen bikes that are recovered by the police actually ever get back to their owners. A bike being registered is also a deterance from it getting stolen in the first place. Don't take any chances with your ride, have it registered today, for FREE! Conveniently at the TMI bike shop!

TMI Goes Celebrity!
On Tuesday, August 26th, a reporter for the Maranda show Where You Live, came by the shop to do a story on The Motion Initiative. It was an awesome day. Both the kids and volunteers were very excited at the prospect of everyone in West Michigan seeing them on TV and learning about their bike shop. They took a lot of footage around the shop of kids working on bikes, taking care of the shop, etc.  Then they interviewed Duane, a couple of our kids, and a couple of the volunteers.

The show will be airing 4 different times on different channels, so there are a lot of opportunities to watch.  Be sure to tune in and see TMI go celebrity!

2 More GRBMX Races
2 more Races left for GRBMX’s Inaugural 2008 Season!!!

Everyone at Helmets On / Grand Rapids BMX would like to say thank you for a phenomenal inaugural season. We had a tremendous turnout all season long and our rider count continues to grow with each race. We averaged over 50 riders per race this year and we have 2 more races to go. That is an awesome stat let’s keep it growing next year.

After our last race of the season, this Saturday Sept. 6, we will be doing some substantial work on a couple of areas of the track as well as in our concession building. So the track will be closed to all riders until spring.

We are anticipating a huge year next year, with some big races scheduled, a Michigan NBL state qualifier along with an NBL national mid-west regional race.

Again thank you and please keep an eye on our website, www.grbmx.com, for updates and information about Grand Rapids BMX. And we look forward to seeing everyone in the spring.
