Couple raises $1400 for TMI! |
Joanne Robben and Tom Sellmer took it into their heads to travel from Peachtree City, Georgia, to their summer home on Torch Lake in northern Michigan via bicycle. Through this trip, they have raised $1418.53 to benefit The Motion Initiative. Tonight Tom stopped by the shop and handed us a stack of checks from friends, family, and other supporters that equaled over $1,400. It is a great blessing and we would like to personally thank Tom, Joanne, and their daughter Lindsey who put this all together. We are very grateful for loving, and giving supporters such as these three and those that donated through them.
This puts us about 1/3 of the way to our fund-raising goal this year. Since we are already half way through the year, would you please consider donating to TMI today and help us reach our goal so that we can continue providing cycling opportunities to dis-advantaged youth?
From Joanne: This ride was not planned as a fundraiser, but if it can be the catalyst for donations to a great cause like The Motion Initiative, we are honored to be part of it. I am not exaggerating when I say that bicycling has transformed and impacted my entire adult life. If the good people at The Motion Initiative can introduce even one young person in Grand Rapids to the freedom and joy of bicycling (while instilling a work ethic and sense of responsibility, a tall order), they will have done a wonderful thing. So we want to thank Lindsey, who wanted to find a way to honor our ride and found the perfect cause.

TMI awarded DALMAC Grant for Road Bikes |
Just recently, we traveled to Lansing, MI to take part in a Tri-County Bicycle Association meeting with the honor of accepting a $3,000 check from the DALMAC fund. Kadesha, Scooter, Scotty, Brett, and Thomas all had the wonderful pleasure of representing The Motion Initiative and its programs at the meeting. The $3,000 will be used to purchase new road bikes and will allow TMI to continue to grow into the sport of road biking, offering participating youth the opportunity to ride brand new bikes suited for the sport. We would like to express our sincere thanks to DALMAC and The TCBA for the grant money and especially Carolyn Chapman from the Rapid Wheelmen for her tireless support of The Motion Initiative and its kids in the sport of road biking. For more information, please visit the Tri-County Bicycle Association or the DALMAC websites.

A new playground for the kids! |
On Friday, May 21, over 150 volunteers showed up at Kensington Park on the corner of Hall St SW and Dorchester Ave in the Black Hills to build a new playground for the kids! KaBOOM! along with corporate sponsors Amway, and with the help of the Black Hills community built a beautiful new playground, refurbished all the picnic tables, built a stage, put up a mural, cleared brush, and much more! This will be an amazing new play space for the kids after so many years of having no decent playground in sight. For more pictures, visit the UICM facebook page. |

TMI Rides in Silence again in 2010 |
The annual Ride of Silence took off in Grand Rapids from Riverside Park on Monroe Ave. A group from TMI head out from our bike shop, hooked up with PedalGR at Founders, and then met the Ride of Silence at the Park for a total ride over 20 miles. The Ride of Silence is a slow paced, silent ride, intended to remember and honor those that have been hurt or killed while riding their bikes. It is also an advocacy effort to help bring awareness to cyclists and the need to share the road. TMI and it's youth have been participating in the Ride of Silence for the past 3 years, and will more than likely host the ride in 2011. For more pictures from the event, visit our Facebook page. |
Weather reports showed rain all weekend, but The Motion Initiative and it's race team braved the forecast and headed to the annual Ft Custer Stampede anyway. Good thing too, because the forecast was wrong! We were hit by a few showers here and there, mostly Saturday night and early Sunday morning. But after we put away our soaked tents and got to the race, the sun came out and warmed everything up for a wonderful day at the races. Everyone had a great time! Click here for the race results.
